After a 2-year break from long-distance running, I decided to lace up the trainers and take on the greatest race of them all - the London Marathon. When I last stomped the streets of London in 2018, it happened to be the hottest event on record, with temperatures reaching 24.1 Celsius. But even the sweltering heat couldn't take away from the exhilarating atmosphere that no other global race can provide. With 1m supporters, attending each year, and £1bn raised for charity since inception - there's nothing quite like LM!
This years' charity partner was the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK. The charity was founded in memory of Bobby Moore OBE, who captained West Ham and led the England men’s senior team to their first and only World Cup victory in 1966. He was 51 when he died of bowel cancer in 1993. Shortly after, his widow Stephanie Moore OBE set up a fund to raise money for bowel cancer research and increase public awareness of the disease. Their incredible work has contributed to a fall of more than 30% in mortality rates for bowel cancer.
I'm delighted to have surpassed our fundraising target by raising £2,500, with the help of our wonderful supporters and donors. The money raised will help fund ground-breaking research into bowel cancer, which remains the second most common cause of cancer death in the UK, with 46 people losing their lives to the disease every day in the UK. I am humbled by the overwhelming support we've received and we thank all those who have helped us make our 2024 headline event a great success!
